LTL Freight Shipping Without the Guesswork

Less-than-truckload (LTL) is how most companies move pallet freight that will not fill a trailer. You pay for the space and class of your shipment, not for the whole truck. Other shippers' freight rides with yours. The carrier's terminal network does the consolidation. That is cheaper than a dedicated truck when the shipment is small, stackable, and not on a tight clock.

It is also where invoices go wrong. Freight class, density, extra services, and reweighs can turn a low quote into a high bill. Xavier Logistics is a freight broker, not an asset LTL carrier. We don't run terminals. We quote LTL, compare it to partial and truckload, and stay on the file after pickup. Connor Maciag founded the company in 2022. We book as an agent of Freight Tec Management Group Inc (MC-147619, USDOT 179548).

LTL pricing runs through partner capacity, including Priority1 on our About page: https://www.xavier-logistics.com/about. Sibel Demiralp handles order entry and tracing. Support is 24/7. We cover the United States and Canada, densest in the Midwest and on the West Coast.

WHEN LTL MAKES SENSE, AND WHEN IT DOES NOT

Use LTL when you have roughly 1 to 6 pallets, the freight can take terminal handling, and transit can follow the carrier's service standard. A typical fit is palletized product under about 10,000 pounds with a freight class that is not extreme.

Do not default to LTL when density or class makes the rate climb toward a truck. Do not use it when the product is fragile, high value, or cannot be restacked at a breakbulk terminal. Do not use it when the receiver will refuse freight that shows up a day late on a multi-transfer route.

That is when partial truckload (https://www.xavier-logistics.com/partial-truckload) or a box truck (https://www.xavier-logistics.com/box-truck) is usually the better buy: fewer stops, fewer touches, still not a full 53 feet. And when the trailer is mostly full, the appointment is tight, or the freight cannot be co-loaded, book full truckload (https://www.xavier-logistics.com/full-truckload).

We price more than one mode on the same specs when the shipment sits near a breakpoint. A 10-pallet, 12,000-pound load can be cheaper as volume LTL, as a partial, or as a cheap truckload, depending on the lane that week. You should see those options, not just an LTL tariff line.

HOW LTL RATES ACTUALLY GET BUILT

LTL is not a mileage-only product. Carriers price from freight class (NMFC), weight and dimensions, stackability, origin and destination, and extra services. Class is driven by density, stowability, handling, and liability. Accessorials that change the bill include liftgate, inside, residential, limited access, appointments, sort and segregate, and protection from freeze. Fuel and minimums sit on top.

If you give us a class that does not match the density, the carrier will reclass after pickup. If you omit a liftgate, it shows up on the invoice.

Volume LTL sits between standard LTL and a partial. The shipment is large enough that class matters less and space and weight matter more. If your LTL quote is already eating most of a trailer, ask us to price volume LTL and PTL side by side.

HOW XAVIER RUNS AN LTL SHIPMENT

Send the specs. We quote against partner LTL capacity, including Priority1, and we will say if a partial or a truck is cleaner. Once you tender, Sibel enters the order and we dispatch pickup. Tracking is available. For truckload and partials we use MacroPoint GPS. For LTL we pull carrier tracing so you are not sitting on hold with a terminal.

If an accessorial gets billed that was not part of the pickup, we push back. If there is a claim, we work it as the broker in the middle. Coverage details, including the $100k cargo figure listed on our site plus extra for high-value freight, are on the Shippers page: https://www.xavier-logistics.com/shippers. Ask us about cargo coverage before you tender high-value LTL. Terminal handling is not the same risk profile as a sealed truckload.

Nick Cox covers reefer when temperature control is required. Flag hazmat, freeze protection, and appointment-heavy receivers up front. Canada shipments need commercial invoices and the usual cross-border docs; send them with the quote request if you have them.

Cathy, Logistics Coordinator at RPP Containers, said: "Thank you for making my job a little easier. Very glad that we've been able to establish a good relationship and grateful for your excellent service. You've been a great resource for me as well as others at RPP." On LTL that looks like classing it right and catching the liftgate.

HOW TO GET AN LTL QUOTE

Email cmaciag@freight-tec.com or call 513-259-3505. Include origin and destination (city, state or province, and zip or postal code if you have them), pieces or pallets, weight, dimensions, NMFC class if you know it, commodity, pickup date, and every extra service the docks will need.

If you don't know the class, send dims and weight and we will work density. If this is repeating freight, say so. Volume is how LTL gets cheaper over time, which is the same advice we give Shippers (https://www.xavier-logistics.com/shippers) who are tired of one-off portal rates.

FAQs

Q1. What freight is a good fit for LTL?

LTL fits roughly 1 to 6 pallets of stackable freight that can take terminal handling and does not need exclusive use of a trailer. If class or cube pushes the rate toward a truck, ask us to price partial or full truckload too.

Q2. Why do LTL quotes change after pickup?

Carriers reclass or reweigh when the declared class, density, or dimensions don't match the freight, and they add accessorials that were not on the original quote. Accurate dims, weight, class, and extra services on the first request prevent most surprises.

Q3. What is the difference between LTL, volume LTL, and partial truckload?

Standard LTL prices by class and weight through a terminal network. Volume LTL is for larger LTL shipments where space and weight matter more than class. Partial truckload shares a trailer with one or two other shippers and skips most terminal handling.

Q4. How do I request an LTL rate from Xavier Logistics?

Email cmaciag@freight-tec.com or call 513-259-3505 with origin, destination, pieces, weight, dimensions, commodity, pickup date, and accessorials. We quote as a broker using partner LTL capacity, including Priority1.
